Me @ Tumblr

March 23rd, 2012

For all you rumblin’ Tumblr folk out there, I’ve joined the blog service. I’m going to attempt to use it as the place where I can post and share stuff more unreservedly, because I’m always nervous about updating this blog, Deviantart, or Twitter with insignificant content. Hopefully this alert was significant!

Oh god, not tumblr! Don’t make this mistake!

Tumblr ruins things. It sucks in creativity and spits out a tangled mess of microfads. It is a hyper-condensed mirror of the internet, focusing all of the worst parts, a few of the best parts, but mostly all of the worst parts! Tumblr is a place where culture itself goes not only to die, but to mutate into something similar to what Bo looks like in the latest comics.

Maybe I’m exaggerating a little though.

It’s not that YOUR stuff will become corrupted itself, mind you. Individuals use tumblr and remain intact. It’s just that Tumblr will use what you give it to do its evil bidding, which is something I hate to see (because I have Opinions). I’ll probably still click through from this site to see what you’re posting there.

Ha ha, I sympathize. I resisted Tumblr for a long time because it seems like a cumbersome experience (and I’ve confirmed some of this). Specifically for interactions. You have to clutter your own blog with repeated content just to add a comment to the chain, the only form of messaging is through technical misuse of the “Ask a question” feature, and other things like that.

HOWEVER it handles the backend so nicely, I can use it to just shit out a lot of doodles and stuff and see who’s paying attention. I’m having a good time with that so far! And I LOVE its archive view, the mosaic of past posts: http://michaelfirman.tumblr.com/archive
I wish I could do something like that on this site, underneath the comic or something. Well I’m sure I COULD, but I wish I wasn’t so aggravated by coding.

Tumblr can be ok. Sure, the site is glutted by legions of blogs that exist solely to reblog with mass abandon, reducing cultural attention spans to virtually nil. But, there are some pretty great tumblrs out there that go against the grain. I follow blogs that post lengthy book reviews, blogs of music writers that I use to discover new songs and fresh perspectives on stuff I know, blogs featuring only original artistic content, and so forth. I, for one, only use my blog to discuss obscure music and to post my artwork.

Obviously Tumbling is problematic for many reasons, but I think when used correctly it can be a pretty cool thing to engage with others. It’s just not really a black and white thing, you know?

Hey, in the end I’m just fine with people who incessantly reblog because they end up promoting my work and I’m selfish like that!
